PAL Turbine Services, LLC assists clients in the installation and start-up of other manufacturer's products applied to General Electric® gas and steam turbines. Clients with GE power plants often purchase alternative replacement auxiliary components to upgrade their turbines. They include complete control systems with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC). In combination with PLC systems, owners of power plants have had success at extending the life of the turbines with improved auxiliary components supplied by companies other than the OEM.

Many times these alternative suppliers do not have qualified installation and start-up engineers like those at PAL. Our team has GE-trained field engineers with the knowledge and experience to make the conversions successful.

CM&U: Changing out Inlet Guide Vanes with the Rotor in Place

Download-BrochureAt first, General Electric contended that the compressor rotor had to be removed to “gain access” to the IGV for changing vanes, bushings and other hardware. PAL proved that the rotor could remain in place. On the Frame 7, GE thought it “might” be doable without removing the rotor; on the Frame specialty1_a6,they contended it was too tight and nearly impossible; on the Frame 5 (forget about it).

PAL engineers believed otherwise and have proved it on all three model series of GE gas turbines. To date, we have changed IGV on MS7001EA in Missouri, MS6001B in Indiana, MS5001P in Iowa, and most recently on MS5002B specialty1_bfor a refinery owner in Mississippi. All were done without removing the compressor rotor, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars and avoiding days of delays and lost power generation.

Turbine Alignment – External & Internal

alignment-pic1Turbine alignment techniques have evolved over the years. For example, shaft alignment by disconnecting couplings and using dial indicators or feeler gages and micrometers has given way to optical methods or sophisticated laser systems. Furthermore, turbine internal “ stick” micrometers with audio devices and references to wire “sag charts.” On some smaller steam turbines, the OEM provided dummy shaft mandrels to be used with extension arms to sweep the diaphragms bores or casings.

There is no substitute for having an experienced, OEM-trained field service engineer. Many newer alignment-pic2companies falsely claim that using laser devices will give better results. Progress may be good for the turbine maintenance business; what is better, however, is having an experienced, OEM-trained field service engineer who can interpret the data and “make the right moves” to mitigate delays in the outage. Whatever the alignment method chosen, there is no substitute for having the turbine savvy required to do the job right the first time. And as we say:

Jaw Clutch Replacement with SSS Clutch


The SSS device is a new design that allows for restarting the turbine after a shutdown, when the rotor speed drops below 500 rpm. This is very important on emergency and “black start” gas turbines.


Manufactured by SSS Clutch®. PAL has provided field engineering services on gas turbines to replace the original GE jaw clutches on four MS6001B turbines for an Indiana utility, as well as on MS5001D in Kansas. We even accomplished this change in Trinidad on a MS7001B unit.

Gas Turbine Fuel System Upgrades

specialty4_aManufacturer Young & Franklin® provides fuel bypass valves and Roper® provides fuel pumps and flow dividers. These components, along with modern PLC controls, allow gas turbines from the 1960s and 1970s to be upgraded with modern systems. This is part of the “life extension” programs offered by alternative controls companies. PAL supplies technical advisory services for installations and start-ups, as it has recently done in the Bahamas and Vermont for projects involving MS5001 gas turbines.

specialty4_bAlso, notice that the flow divider on the right utilizes high-pressure flexible hosing with AN fittings, instead of reusing the original rigid tubing. This allows for “quick change” of flow dividers in the future, if ever required.

Diesel Engine Replacement

specialty5_aHaberek® Auto Diesel Machine in Amsterdam, NY reconditions and reapplies Cummins® 903 engines, replacing the original starting means that are 30 to 40 years old. PAL has provided installation and start-up services recently in Kentucky and Kansas on MS5001 gas turbines.

specialty5_bCummins® did not offer an engine replacement that could fit into the same “footprint.” Thus, an engine originally designated for industrial applications was modified, reusing the same torque converter from the original. The change out takes about 2 weeks after some on-site adaptations.

Water-cooled, Liquid Fuel (WCLF) Check Valves

specialty2_a Manufactured by Jansen Aircraft Systems Controls, Inc®, this modification was recently installed for a Florida utility. PAL provided field engineering services and start-up on a GE 7EA dual fuel gas turbine.
